Virtual Cable nav system superimposes route guidance on your windshield in 3D – Engadget

So, I created a prototype HUD for car navigation once upon a time, but it was nothing like this.  The Virtual Cable is such an intelligent and intuitive design that I’m jealous and in awe at the same time.  Still, drivers will need to use their brains so they don’t end up like this.

TechCrunch: Path Intelligence Monitors Foot Traffic in Retail Stores By Pinging People’s Phones

I think the title of the article is just a tad inaccurate.  It sounds like the Path Intelligence system listens for the pings that already occur.  It doesn’t actually ping them itself.   It would be very interesting to see how the data is graphed.

Mobile device usability

Blue Flavor: Mobile Device UI Design

I came across this while researching different mobile user interfaces, and I think it’s a good analysis of what drives user interface design in the mobile industry.

I love this part:

…as much as we’d like to forget, the U.S. is not the center of the mobile world. The devices we see here are usually designed for consumers in the UK or the Netherlands. (Asian phones rarely make their way to the States, with a few exceptions like the upcoming MVNO Helio)

Outside the U.S., people use mobile technology far differently than we do, often using SMS and mobile web features more than they do voice. Device UIs are designed for flexibility, to allow subscribers to use little apps and tools that we may find a little gadgety.

Q&A with Bruce Schneier

Bruce Schneier Blazes Through Your Questions – Freakonomics – Opinion – New York Times Blog

Wow.  this Q&A is so rich with good information it’s hard to know what to point out.  Check this out:

More and more, your data isn’t under your direct control. Your e-mail is at Google, Hotmail, or your local ISP. Online merchants like Amazon and eBay have records of what you buy, and what you choose to look at but not buy. Your credit card company has a detailed record of where you shop, and your phone company has a detailed record of who you talk to (your cell phone company also knows where you are). Add medical databases, government databases, and so on, and there’s an awful lot of data about you out there. And data brokers like ChoicePoint and Acxiom collect all of this data and more, building up a surprisingly detailed picture on all Americans.

Really, read the whole thing.
