Firewire is doomed.
It may be a while before it completely disappears, but I believe the marketplace has spoken. Not only is there no firewire port on the new unibody macbooks, it appears that they can’t even be booted in target disk mode. Working in an all-Mac lab, with all-firewire video recording and editing devices, this change has affected one student needing to finish a project today, and I know I will see more of this as time goes on.
Late update: the 13 inch macbook pro brings the firewire back.
