Snow Leopard has a Built-in Cisco VPN Client

Now that’s a nice surprise to find hiding under the hood.

System Preferences –> Network –> Add (+). Under the Interface dropdown menu select VPN.  Choose your type (Cisco isn’t the only option), enter your credentials, and Bob’s your uncle.

Encrypt the Cloud, Security Luminaries Tell Google

How many times can I say that this is a good idea? The security of my internet connections has been at the center of my attention for years, and it’s why I have a hard time trusting mobile internet access.  With my N800 it’s possible to set up an encrypted ssh tunnel and proxy the web browser through that, but it’s very tricky.  I have no idea if such capabilities exist for the ipod touch.

Blackberry duplicate calendar entries? Got Facebook 1.5 on your device?

The Facebook 1.5 app created a problem of duplicate calendar entries on my Blackberry.  I thought deleting the application would fix it (I don’t really use Facebook much anyway), and at first it seemed like it did.  But then more duplicate entries appeared.  When I examined them in detail, they would show up as Facebook calendar entries.  The link in the title shows what worked for me, post Facebook deletion:

If you want to totally delete the Facebook calendar then go into Options -> Advanced -> Service Books and delete Facebook [ICAL]

Many thanks to Crackberry forums user TheStoffer for this solution, for it seems to be working.

With Liberty and Justice for All.

From Slashdot, a story about spreading cell phones throughout the developing world. The article isn’t well written, but the guy it focuses on, Denis O’Brien, has the right ideas. Basically, if you get mobile phones to people and give them the chance to communicate, you have sown the seeds for more open governments. I think he’s right.

Tangentially related is the call for a Technology Bill of Rights over at Techcrunch. Too many laws, policies, and regulations were enacted before the radical information technology expansion of the last fifteen years. They need to be adapted, and a Technology Bill of Rights can be an excellent guide. Erick Schonfeld’s proposal encompasses copyright, Net Neutrality, and privacy, each of which are important issues that have to be dealt with under new models. The old ways just aren’t going to cut it anymore, and our federal, state, and local governments need good technology advice (and advisors). This is a good start.
